Lucy Owen
Lucy is the general manager for Brooklyn Math Tutors.
She graduated from Davidson College in 2010, having majored in studio art, minored in chemistry, and completed the classes for a pre-medicine requirement.
She has a real love for math and sciences, and has a talent for sharing her excitement for the subjects. She is a skilled Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus I tutor. She also has extensive experience in tutoring physics and chemistry.
In addition to tutoring, Lucy also has a passion for contemporary art. She is currently an intern for an online contemporary art news source, working as a writer and video editor. She has been lucky to be able to pursue both her love for tutoring and her love for contemporary art.

Patrick van Nieuwenhuizen
Patrick grew up on Long Island and graduated with honors from Princeton in 2010. He worked hard in both math and physics, and was awarded the Allen G. Shenstone Prize for outstanding undergraduate work.
Now, after some adventures abroad (founding a health program in Zimbabwe, which you can check out at www.upenyu.org), he is back in New York, engaging his love of teaching.
Patrick believes 99% of students can be brilliant in math and physics, if only they can master the basics — once they do, everything else falls into place. He has been fortunate to have some amazing worldly experience which he uses to motivate adventurous kids. He tutors math, physics and chemistry, and will be doing so until he begins his M.D. program in the fall.
Until then he will be playing lots of Chopin, slowly working through tough books, and hopefully tutoring as many young physicists and mathematicians as possible!
Patrick’s credentials include scores of 800 on the Math SAT I, Math SAT II, Physics SAT II as well as 5′s on both the AP Calculus (BC) and Physics exams.
Carol Winick
Carol graduated with honors from Vassar college, having earned degrees in both Mathematics and Russian Studies.
She studied education at the graduate and undergraduate level and worked as a TA for a calculus course while at Vassar. In pursuing teaching, she received a Recognition of Excellence from ETS (Educational Testing Services) and has worked as a private tutor in OR, NY, and CT for 3+ years.
Carol enjoys working with a variety of students, ranging from kindergartners trying to understand the concept of numbers and operations to college students looking for some extra support in real analysis, calculus, and algebra courses. She understands that while it is not uncommon to find math intimidating or frustrating, it does not need to be that way, and she specializes in fostering students’ confidence in their own abilities and in helping them to develop their own tools to succeed in math.
In addition to math, Carol also tutors younger students in reading skills.
Steve Stein
A lifelong New Yorker, Steve graduated from Stuyvesant High School and New York University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Steve studied mathematics, economics, and music, and is determined to read everything under the sun. He scored a 1530 on the SAT and an 800 on the Math SAT II.
Steve views education as the process by which people reach their full potential. He’s particularly keen on teaching math as a discipline of rigorous and creative thinking, and not just as a way of solving a particular set of problems.
An experienced tutor and teacher, he holds a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education, and welcomes any skill level from Algebra I to Calculus and beyond.
In his spare time, he plays piano, composes soundtracks for short films, and drinks green tea.
Kira Bucca
Kira recently finished her Masters in Psychology and has a degree in Neuroscience.
She has been tutoring math since high school, where she was the head of the tutoring program through the National Honors Society. She also worked as a TA during her graduate studies and has a lot of experience working with students one on one and in groups. She is very friendly and loves working with students of all ages.
In addition to having a scientific and technical academic past, Kira is interested in the arts and works as a fashion photographer. Her diverse background allowes her to find different real life references to help a student better understand the material.
Kira likes to build strong positive relationships with her students that continue even after she has finished working with them.
